Here is my Think Pink speech from last night. Please share or pass it on, you just never know when someone may need to hear these words! My goal is to impact as many lives as possible!
Fusion Life and Fitness
I am truly honored to be here among so many that are joining together in the fight against Breast Cancer…a cowardly disease that has taken far too many lives.
When asked to sp...eak here today so many different ideas crossed my mind. I thought back to being a child scared to raise my hand in class, scared to look at the teacher, scared to have eye contact, scared to talk in front of anyone. Scared of what I would say and what I would sound like…
I then remembered my first cancer scare, when I was just 21. My first of 7 surgeries and how fortunate I have been that all 7 surgeries resulted in benign tumors or cysts, but never cancer. My fear could never compare to those that have faced the disease head on, those that are so strong and so amazing. I thought about those that haven’t been so fortunate, those that we have lost.
What an eye opener fear can be, to so many things in life. The fact that tomorrow isn’t promised; that there are no guarantees and that so much of life is spent under stress, sadness and in difficult situations.
Driving down the road today and I had to pull over to type up this message...I apologize if it sounds too harsh. A dear friend of mine had posted we are not living in eternity...as we well know, we are going to die. But at this very moment we are alive, we are living and this is our life to live, our choices to make and our examples to set.
If your kids were in the car with you, would speed down the road at excessive speeds? Would you jump out of a plane without a parachute? Would you drink and drive with them in the car? Of course not...and although it is different, we are teaching our children how to live. They follow our examples...although sometimes they stray, they do learn from what we show them.
This isn't any different when it comes to our health. They are learning to live from what they see. Your choices are their example. Not only do they learn from you, but they count on you. They count on you to make choices that help you live a long, healthy and active life. We can't control major accidents, but we can control our day to day health. We can choose to set a good example and be more active with our children. We can teach them how to live...instead of how to die.
As a wellness coach, trainer and the founder of Fusion Life and Fitness, a non-profit organization committed to helping people live a healthier life, I often have people that come to me asking how to “lose weight.” Of course, this is one of the most common questions any trainer will be asked. It’s the goal of so many…but the answer isn’t so simple. It is important to me to dig deeper, the learn about our guests and to truly make a lasting impact. My goal is not to help someone lose weight, but to truly help guests transform their lives. After all, weight concerns are just the beginning and often times this means health concerns, increase in stress, low self-esteem, fatigue, lack in confidence and so much more. All of these items lead to an increase in the risk of cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease …and so much more.
The first thing I do is ask my guests to think about the impact that a healthier lifestyle will have on their life; their family, their attitude, the energy level, their work. How have weight concerns or poor health impacted them and how will it change them in the future?
The answers that I receive often bring me to tears..and I don’t say this lightly. For a lot of people this is the first time that they have faced a problem that has haunted them for years. It’s the first time they thought about how they feel and what they have been hiding from for so long. It’s the first time that they though beyond “weight loss”
A few examples of what I am talking about are:
I sit on the sidelines watching all of the other people and wish I could be one of those people, but I never have been. I am embarrassed of my appearance in every aspect, so I just try and blend in the background. I don't even recognize myself anymore when I look in the mirror. I have been overweight probably >90% of my life it seems so overwhelming of a mountain right now to even find where to start. I am so extremely out of shape that even walking upstairs at work will make me short of breath, but I feel overwhelmed and beat down at the effort it will take to lose the weight. I honestly don't like to work out and exercise, so I will have to figure out how to get past that. I feel like a failure starting and stopping with the weight loss and have just given up on myself. It affects my marriage, my self-esteem, my health but I have felt to beat down for so long that it seems insurmountable.
The biggest obstacles will probably be fear of trying/failing again and that I am not someone who takes time for myself at all.
Another response …..
I'm afraid if I don't make a change I will die. My family will no longer have a mother. My grandkids will no longer have a grandma. My life will come to an end when it doesn't have to. My choices got me here and my choices can change it. I can change my life. I can make a difference. I can survive. I can live for many more years and I can do it actively. I don't want this to be what my kids see. I don't want this to be how my kids live. I'm doing this for me...because doing this for me means that I am here for them. Nothing can stop me. I'm doing this...I choose to live, I'm a survivor
And one more
I look in the mirror and am disgusted. I don't like what looks back at me. My focus is only on my looks and I am ashamed. I want to learn to be happy from the inside out. I want to see more than my weight. I want my weight to be a result of hard work and commitment, a change in lifestyle. I want to feel happy and have energy because of life choices. I want to dig deeper to feel more...my weight will be a result of my happiness instead of depression being a result of my weight.
I refuse to die. I refuse to let my weight control my activity, my moods, my health and my life. I refuse to sit here and continue to eat junk being lazy and helpless. I will change my life. I will beat this disease. I will look it in the eye, take it down and show it who is in control.
As you can see, when you take time to dig deeper you learn so much about who you are as a person and who you want to be. It is possible that there are some of you out there that can relate to some of these statements, and some of you that have worked hard to overcome them. These feelings go beyond weight, the stress that these feelings cause are deep and damaging.
Diet and Exercise are just part of what makes us healthy and happy. Life is flying by and we often lose track of what is important. I’m going to quickly talk about a few helpful hints…ones that I often struggle with myself.
Chasing the Bone…and Chasing Tail
Chasing the Bone, have you ever watched a dog race where they chase the bone around the track. They keep running and running after the bone but they just can’t quite catch it. No matter how bad they want it, they just can’t get it. While they are chasing the bone they are passing by so much going on around them. This is often a representation of life. We keep going and going after what we think we want, the things we believe will bring us happiness. While we are so busy chasing happiness, happiness is happening all around us. The small things, the meaningful things, the things that life is made of, they keep happening but we keep missing them.
When not chasing a bone, we may be chasing our tail. By this I mean that we keep getting what we want, what we have worked so hard for, what we thought we wanted and then we get it and we don’t know what to do with it. It didn’t bring us the happiness we expected so we let go..and go after it again and again and again. You can spend your whole life chasing a bone or chasing your tail if you don’t step back and take time to appreciate what you have, where you are at. It passes by fast, and we know this but we often forget.
We make choices in life. We can choose to only live everyday and only day once, or we can choose to slowly die every day. What I mean by this
Dying a little everyday means that you are making decisions that in return may be slowly killing you, decisions that cause stress, you are living an unhealthy lifestyle, you are setting aside your wants and your desires, you are living for others but not taking care of yourself, you are forgetting to laugh, forgetting to enjoy…you aren’t truly living, but seem to be slowly dying every day. The world around us has set us up to live an unhealthy lifestyle if we are not careful. Everything is in such a hurry. We have fast food so we can hurry up and eat. We have unhealthy processed foods, we have video games that keep our kids occupied instead of active. Schools are taking out physical fitness and creativity. Hours of homework and limited family time. Anxiety, depression, alcoholism and stress levels continue to climb. This doesn’t have to continue
You can also choose to live every day and only die once. This is your choice. This is the choice you want to teach your children, the choice that you won’t regret, the choice that makes every day, every minute, every second count. This is your choice! This means taking time to laugh, taking time to relax, taking time to be you! It means forgiving, smiling, jumping for joy, judging less and living more. It means letting life happen…no, it means making life happen. It means not burying your head in the sand, not walking away from opportunity due to the fear of failure. Failure is amazing! It’s a driving force for success. It’s a challenge to do it better. Failure means you tried. Failure means living.
Stress, unhealthy living, judging others, worrying and poor relationships lead to disease and increase your risk for cancer. For everyone here today, you are not dead yet. You are living. You are amazing. You have amazing opportunities. You have the opportunity to be what you want to be, to do what you want to do, you have the opportunity to teach others how to live instead of how to die. My life, my success, my happiness often comes from the ability to see happiness in others. To get excited, to laugh, to change, to go for it.
As we sit here today knowing that so many face an incredible struggle with this cowardly disease that robs us of memories that we never get to experience, robs us of friends, family, vacations, robs us of life….I’ve came along way from that shy girl that didn’t want to speak. I’ve taken a pledge to make a difference in the lives of others. I ask that you take a stand. That together we pledge for a healthier lifestyle. That you leave here today with a smile on your face and an appreciation for what you have. That you make decisions that bring you happiness and a healthier lifestyle. I ask that you teach your children to live, to live strong, healthy and happy. One smile, one workout, one healthy meal, it all starts with one step!
Life is short. It doesn't matter who you are, what you are doing, what you have done in the past, none of it matters. The reality is that YOU ARE NOT DEAD YET. Your past is yesterday’s news. Today starts right now; your future is yours to create. Dig deep, figure out what is important to you...figure out why...you decide how happy you want to be, how much you want to shine, how active you want to be...you decide how you want to feel, how you want to live and how you want to be remembered. You decide....and then you do it. Don't wait...start doing it now because tomorrow is not promised to anyone.....right now is your time.
America has put healthy living on the wayside and it’s time we take it back. It’s time that we fight diseases that are destroying our lives. Cancer is a cowardly disease that has enough power of its own, it doesn’t need our help! Cancer has won many battles, but for every survivor out there, for every supporter out there, for every child of a survivor, you are winning the war. Together we will never give up, together we can bring healthier living back to our lives and in the end, we will win!
